Regional leaders
travel to Europe to continue lobby efforts for sugar
and banana industries

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders will mount separate
missions to Europe next month to lobby heads and other
influential persons as they seek a reversal of fortunes
for the sugar and banana industries hard hit by the decision
of the European Union to implement new reform measures,
CARICOM Secretary General Edwin Carrington has announced.
Carrington told a news conference that the mission was
important given the new position adopted by the European
Union as regards the reduce price for sugar and bananas
on the markets in Europe.
“We at the level of heads of government have decided
that we are not just going to be reactive, we are going
to be positive and proactive in these matters and have
agreed to send a delegation of heads of governments to
European capitals within the next month to put our case
before the authorities in the various capitals of Europe,”
Carrington said.
