CaribWorldNews, WASHINGTON, D.C., Thurs. Oct. 30, 2008:
A top D.C. lobbying firm was paid over $40,000 in a six-month period to help Haiti get the Haitian Hemispheric Opportunity through Partnership Encouragement Act pushed through.
A CWNN analysis of the latest Foreign Agents REgistration Act report, released this week, reveals that Travis & Rosenberg, P.A. of 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. was paid $46,167.54 for the six-month period ending January 31, 2008.
Their job description – to interact with U.S. governmental officials in the administration and congress on the HOPE act for the extremely poor country dependent on international aid.
Sorini, Samet & Associates, LLC, another lobbyist firm was also retained, the FARA report ending December 2007 said.
They were hired `to enhance Haiti's position in the U.S. apparel market by meeting with congressional staffers.` However, their cost was not revealed.
The Haitian Hemispheric Opportunity through Partnership Encouragement Act (HOPE), enacted by the U.S. Congress in December 2006, provides duty free access for textile/apparel products that could boost production in the sector. In 2007, Congressman John Spratt introduced a bill to amend the act to extend the date for the President to determine if Haiti meets certain requirements, and for other purposes. That bill was referred to the House Subcommittee on Trade.
