The Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium complex was completed for the 2007 Cricket World Cup at a whopping a cost of US$30 million. Now the new Jamaica Labor Party government is contemplating life after world cup for the stadium, which has been largely idle since the ICC event.
Minister of Industry, Commerce and Investment, Karl Samuda, recently revealed that government has formed a committee to determine how the stadium will be run and how to cover the monthly upkeep cost of some US$42,000.
Samuda said so far the running of the facility has been financed until next March with funds provided by funds made available by Jamaica Trade & Invest, JAMPRO and the National Housing Trust.
He said the JLP administration is also contemplating whether to keep the facility totally run by government or whether to bring in private stakeholders. Minister Samuda also said government will be transferring responsibility for the complex from the Ministry of Commerce to the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports.
The stadium was built under an agreement between Jamaica and China that saw the Chinese government put up at least US$30-million needed for the project. – Hardbeatnews.com
